We bought our metro pass for the day and rode the train into the Smithsonian Station on the Orange Line. It took about 30 minutes and Ellie loved it. Although she loved the above ground part more than she liked the below ground part. Anyway, we got off the train, went back above ground to find ourselves in the middle of the mall. Originally I was going to get off at the train station at the Metro Center, but Erin Thomas told me to get off at the Smithsonian, so I did. In the grand scheme of things it didn't really matter, because I was planning on doing a big loop around the capitol, and a big loop we did!
We saw the Washington Monument...
The Jefferson Memorial...
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial...
The Korean War Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial...
The Vietnam War Memorial...
The World War II Memorial
The Capitol...
The Supreme Court...
Train ride home...
All in all, we walked about 9 miles in 5 hours and got a nice tan. We came back to the hotel, relaxed for a few minutes and then went swimming. I really wanted to see the Marine Corps Memorial, so we took a drive and saw-
The Marine Corps Memorial...
Arlington Cemetery...
To end the night we had Outback and frozen lemonade.
Today's stats, 33 miles driving, 9 miles walking, a ton of memorials and monuments, 2 train rides, 2 suntans and that's that. Tomorrow we fly out around 6:00 local time, and get into LAX around 9:00. Then it is back to reality. Before we fly out we are planning on driving to Delaware and New Jersey. We will probably stop in Baltimore on the way back in. Fun times...
